Mick Hangland-Skill

(He/They) Hey! I’m Mick—an award winning photographer and designer specializing in visual journalism. I’m currently a design editor at Gannett|USA TODAY Network where I design and illustrate pages for the company’s flagship publications across the country. On Sundays, you may find one of my cover illustrations on a front page near you. I also keep a bustling photo studio and darkroom where I maintain my freelance and fine art practice.

My work covers a wide range of areas: art direction, photo retouching, illustration, editorial layout, and more. On every project I work on, I bring a keen eye focused on creating engaging visual stories. Get in touch and let’s work on something!

Although I didn’t get to use the *big font* last week, I do have lots of new 1As to show from my first two months at the new gig. I begin each day designing The Journal News in Westchester County, NY before moving on to long-term design project
Following up yesterday’s archive photo with its partner, a portrait of Ben Williams, who was also fighting to protect farmland around the Aurora Airport. I always thought these turned out like photos from the FSA era, but in living color!
Rummaging through the archives and found this portrait of Greg Leo, who was advocating against an expansion of the Aurora Airport onto what he called prime beet growing farmland. I think this was taken back in August 2022.
What have I been up to? In April I started a new job as a Design Editor for @gannettco + @usatoday network newspapers! I’m working on a team that designs the biggest daily papers in the company’s portfolio and of those, my focus has been
